Supervised Computer Access
Make sure that the computer in your home is in plain view at all times when your children are using it. It is much more difficult for a computer-sex offender to communicate with a child when the computer screen is visible to a parent or another member of the household
Don't use the computer as a babysitter!!!
Monitor the computer and Internet use in a similar fashion as you would for television.
SafeTzone! recommends the computer be in a common room such as a family room, dining room or kitchen area that is accessible by all members of the family and not in a child's room so that they can have unfettered access.
Education
Educate yourself and talk to your children about what they are doing on the Internet.
Become more computer literate. In today's day and age the children are learning about computers and most parents barely know how to turn one on. Get to know your computer, even have your kids teach you a little, it will be time well spent with your kids.
Internet Proof Your Child
Street proof your children on the internet the same way you street proof your children in your community
Cellular Phones for Children
Internet predators are constantly looking for ways to facilitate direct contact with children and on many occasions have obtained mobile phone numbers from children during online chat conversations. They will also search the internet for children's online profiles that contain a mobile telephone number or personal information.
These predators have been known to send cell phones to children as gifts. This gesture is part of the grooming process, and can result in the child feeling indebted to the predator. In these situations, predators have also paid the child's telephone bills to ensure that communication can continue without the knowledge of the parents.
Code of Conduct
Encourage your child to create his or her own Internet code of conduct and create an online contract for use of the Internet
Personal Information
Never give out identifying information such as Name, Home Address, School Name, or Telephone Number.
Be sure that you are dealing with someone that you and your parents know and trust before giving out any personal information about yourself via E-mail.
The Internet can be a really great tool, fun to surf in your spare time, and totally entertaining. But remember, some things are just too good to be true.
Pictures
Never send a person a picture of you without first checking with your parent or guardian.
Instant Messaging and Email
Never respond to messages that make you feel uncomfortable!
Be Careful - Stranger Danger!
Remember that people online may not be who they seem. Because you can't see or even hear the person it would be easy for someone to misrepresent him- or herself. Thus, someone indicating that "she" is a "12-year-old-girl" could in reality be an older man.
Online Friends
Get to know your "online friends" just as you get to know all of your other friends.

 |
Parents always tell their children "Don't talk to Strangers" and that rule now has a new meaning talking to strangers all over the world via the internet.
People on the internet can log on using fake names, they can create whole new identities.
|
Cell Phones almost always have built in cameras and are prevalent in every school. These phones can sometimes be used to take inappropriate photos. Digital images can then be easily uploaded to the Internet, posted on a webpage or social networking site or sent via email.
Some young people are experimenting with this technology while exploring their sexuality by taking explicit or revealing pictures of themselves or others.
Once these pictures are on the Internet they are there forever!

The advent of accessible communication via computers has greatly increased the potential for individuals to lure children to places where they can be exploited. Computers are pervasive in our society and in our homes, very popular with youth, and the users are able to communicate anonymously or deceptively as to their identity. Moreover, users are able to cast a wide net, potentially reaching many young persons. Internet luring is a common practice today where children are approached online. An exchange of pornographic images is common with the possibility of a face-to-face meeting with the predator.
 | Canada Raises Age of Consent |
 |
|
Canada's Age of Consent increased from 14 to 16 years effective May 01 2008 It is now illegal for adults in Canada to have sex with a partner under the age of 16. The Tackling Violent Crime Act raises the legal age of sexual consent in Canada to 16 from 14. The law doesn't make criminals out of teens who have sex. It accepts that teens are sexually active, no matter how much parents might be troubled by that. As long as both parties are within five years of each other in age, the law doesn't apply. A 17-year-old boy who has sex with his 15-year-old girlfriend won't be made a criminal.
The new law puts Canada's age of consent in line with those in Britain, Australia and most of the United States.
No longer can sexual predators target naïve 14-year-old girls and boys for exploitation on or off the Internet.
SafeTzone! respects and cares for the children and community and accepts accountability for playing our part in making the Internet a safer place.

Young people are using computer-based cameras known as webcams to transmit sexually explicit images of themselves. Webcams, which are inexpensive and often no bigger than a golf ball, are usually placed on top of a computer monitor. When connected to a computer, these cameras send video images that can be viewed instantaneously by another computer user or simultaneously by many users. Adults who seek to exploit children sometimes mail webcams to children they have met on the Internet to facilitate online sexual encounters.
